Mechanical Pocket Watches
Mechanical pocket watches have been around for centuries now and although they are simplistic still have the ability to be crafted so finely that nothing is able to compare to the work that goes into making them. They can be made in just about any way in a variety of different materials so it is possible to find silver pocket watches, gold pocket watches, or just about any other type that is in existence.
It may be useful to learn how mechanical pocket watches work before deciding to purchase one whether it is for yourself or a friend or family member. In the most basic terminology it is a watch that doesn’t need electronic mechanisms or parts in order to tell time. The watch needs to be wound on occasion and the energy that comes from it being wound causes the wheel to be balanced and then it hits the spring. This is then displayed in the form of hours, minutes, and seconds as well. They were first used during the 1600′s roughly 200 years after the invention of clocks that were spring powered.
The history of mechanical pocket watches dates all the way back to roughly 1760 when John Harrison perfected the technology to keep watches precise down to seconds instead of minutes as previously determined. This was later perfected in 1854 by Waltham Watch Company. The popularity of these types of watches declined after the introduction of quartz watches but they are still very widely desired and perfected in the craftsmanship.
