Swiss Pocket Watches

Pocket watches were first introduced to the world during the 16th century at the time when another invention, the spring driven clock, was introduced. This was utilized to allow individuals to tell time through something as simple as a pocket watch. However, silver pocket watches such as the Swiss pocket watch, were only used by the rich and wealthy individuals when they were first invented due to the cost and status symbol they managed to show everyone.

Swiss pocket watches and other types spread to the general public during the latter portion of the eighteenth century. This means they became more affordable and got used by the common population who valued their functionality over just their appearance as a luxury item only the rich could afford.

The ability to tell time accurately from a pocket watch was improved with the introduction of the lever escapement which was invented in 1759 and utilized by inventors such as Josiah Emery. This technology was a turning point for the Swiss Pocket Watches and allowed individuals to be able to tell time down to the exact minute that it was at any time.

Dominance of the pocket watch industry has shifted many times since they were originally invented with the original introduction being attributed to the French which shifted to the English, then American, and then and still now the Swiss are valued for their contributions to watch making. It is not uncommon now for pocket watches to be extremely elegant and finely crafted to return as symbols of craftsmanship.
